September is a time of transition, getting back to busier times as the more relaxed summer months come to an end. It’s also a time of new beginnings; while January 1st is the start of the calendar year, September has just as much of a pull on us in terms of new beginnings as does New Year’s Day.
In this time of transition from the restful months of summer to a period of new beginnings, it’s more important than ever to take time for yourself and nourish your physical body to prevent feeling frantic, run down, overwhelmed, and succumb to the crash and burn that so often happens later in the fall months once the initial rush has died down.
Over the last few weeks, many people have reported feeling sluggish, “stuck”, or lost, with decreased energy and drive, a loss of focus and vision. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the attributes of Action and Vision relate to the liver and gallbladder. These two organs are essential for healthy digestion and detoxification of the physical body, and energetically they represent the digestion of new ideas and experiences, as well as the detoxification of old patterns and habits that no longer serve us.
- Flow through the rush gracefully rather than succumb to it
- Be calm, cool, and collected rather than frazzled and frantic
- Have energy to carry you throughout the day instead of feeling overwhelmed
- Enhance your ability to cope with stress and release the pressures of the day
- Maintain balance and harmony physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually
A gentle cleansing and rebuilding program is a way to rid the body of wastes and eliminate environmental pollutants (both physical and mental/emotional) that have built up over the last few months and to rebuild and prepare our cells and tissues for the colder months when metabolism slows and a healthy immune system is important for fighting off infection. A focused and specific cleansing and supporting protocol will help provide your body with exactly what it needs to support your unique makeup, while at the same time releasing old patterns and wastes and making way for new purpose and vision to take form.
General tips for fall cleansing:
Go green. Green leafy vegetables such as Swiss chard, kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, dandelion greens, beet greens, arugula, etc. contain a plethora of nutrients and help promote the flow of bile, which is essential for the cleansing process. Enjoy them in salad, soups, or smoothies blended with your favourite fruit.
Eat raw foods each day. Raw foods contain vital enzymes that are destroyed in the cooking process. These enzymes assist in the detoxification process.
Eat foods high in phytonutrients. Beets, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, carrots are high in phytonutrients that support liver function and aid in detoxification. Enjoy these foods raw or lightly steamed. Red grapes and berries are a wonderful source of antioxidants and flavonoids.
Add healthy fats. Healthy fats and oils in the form of flax oil, olive oil, borage oil, hemp oil, etc. help build healthy cell membranes and are critical for healthy liver function.
Choose organic when possible. The drugs, pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers used in most farming applications will counteract your efforts to clear and support your liver. Organic produce and drug free animal products help to decrease the toxic load entering your body.
Drink pure, fresh water. Pure, fresh (unchlorinated!) water hydrates the cells of the body and helps to flush out toxins. Approximately half of your body weight in ounces is a good amount of water to consume (i.e. a 160 lb person should consume approximately 80 ounces, or 10 cups of water daily).
Exercise! Aerobic exercise such as walking, biking, running, dancing, etc., will help get the blood and lymphatic fluids moving, flushing out toxins, and bringing more nutrients and oxygen to all parts of the body.
