If you are on any kind of healing, transformational, or growth path, there can be bumps and hurdles along the way… but how do you know if you are moving backwards or healing forwards?
Have you ever cleaned out an overstuffed, messy closet?
The body, in its infinite wisdom, wants to keep you as healthy as possible. In order to do this, it tries to deal with toxins and other things that are bad for your health and longevity in the most efficient way possible. Sometimes that means pushing things down in order to keep things moving along smoothly. The same goes for old thoughts, patterns, and emotions. The goal is to keep moving, to keep functioning, to keep forging ahead.
Eventually, however, there is no more room in the closet, and it begins to burst at the seams. This is where old patterns, symptoms, pains, fears, and emotions may come back up to the surface, making it look like things are getting worse.
It’s at this point that you may start to feel helpless, overwhelmed, and fearful. In the middle of the mess, you may forget that the healing process involves unpacking the closet in order to deal with all of the things that have been stuffed down so that they can be resolved once and for all. All you see is a return of all of the old patterns, pains, fears, and things that you thought were gone.
It can be frustrating to have worked so hard, made so much progress, then feel like old symptoms, thought patterns, or habits are coming back. You may immediately think that all that work was for nothing, you have to start again.
More often than not, however, this is part of the healing process.
Watch the video below for some perspectives on healing to help you move through this process, and to learn how to listen to your body to understand whether you are moving backwards or healing forwards.
