It’s that time of year again, sneezing, sniffling, headaches, and more. Walking down the aisles at the pharmacy, you will find rows over-the-counter pills are labeled “Cold and Flu”.
If you look at the labels of many of these drugs, you will find that they contain active ingredients for multiple symptoms. The problem is that people buy these products even if they only have one or two of the symptoms. The danger of taking an over the counter drug that doesn’t match your symptoms is over-medication and higher risk of side effects.
It is important to know that these medications do not do anything to clear the bacteria or virus, enhance your immune system, or quicken healing time, they are formulated to suppress symptoms. That’s it. That’s all.
Every symptom is a healing strategy.
A symptom is your body’s attempt to rid itself of the invading virus particles. A runny nose and sneezing helps move the virus out through your nasal passages, a fever is the body’s attempt to prevent the virus from multiplying, and tiredness is a sign that your body is fighting hard and needs rest to heal.
Suppressing symptoms with over the counter medications weakens your body’s ability to fight off infection. These drugs chemically override biochemical processes in the body that are in place to protect you from such invaders as bacteria and viruses. What does this mean? Suppressing symptoms means suppressing the immune system too!
The Solution? Work With the Body, Not Against It!
In dealing with any sort of illness, it is important to work with the body, enhancing and facilitating its natural flow and functions. This means providing it with the things it needs to do its job: rest, hydration, and optimal nourishment for your cells.
In addition to these common sense techniques, the proper use of natural remedies such as herbs, homeopathics, and flower essences can help maintain overall health and support the immune system – without the nasty side effects that come with many synthetic chemical drug formulations.
Every one is biochemically unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. I recommend that you work with a qualified natural health practitioner who can help you navigate your way through a healthy winter without guessing or overspending on products that aren’t right for you.
